Structure Manifesto

Our goal is to create built environments that tread softly on fertile ground,

Efficient, thrifty and healthy spaces

Made, when possible from what is local

And designed to melt back into Earth when its use has been served

We seek to design these structures not as isolated entities,

But to integrate them into the fabric of the farm and all its operations,

Participating in the natural cycles of water, energy and nutrients

And blending harmoniously with the unique landscape of the Palouse.

Structures: Problems and Goals

Our design criteria incline us towards several net-zero goals:

Can our structures be carbon neutral or carbon sequestering? As we seek responsible responses to climate change, we must look to materials which sequester biosphere carbon, in preference to releasing geosphere carbon. Practically, this will limit the use of concrete and synthetic materials made from fossil fuels or at high expenditures of energy. It will favor the use of local materials, stone, timber and straw, and recycled material.

Can the structure be part of a net-zero farm system of water use? We currently use half a million gallons of aquifer water on the four acre farm. There is nearly 3 million gallons of precipitation on that four acres annually, most of which is not captured or utilized since it falls during the winter months. The built environments can play a role in water capture and storage, and with water conserving technology and the reuse of gray water, the structures can be designed to minimize the use of fossil water on the farm.

Can the structure be part of a net-zero system of energy? Efficiently built, well insulated structures, sited to take maximum advantage of solar power for heating and electricity production, can be designed to be net energy producers. The use of wind turbines and the production of methane from farm wastes can also be utilized.

Can the built environments be part of a net-zero system of managing fertility? The production of methane from bio-digestion leaves a slurry which is an excellent fertilizer. Household wastes can be added to the farms' compost system. Composting toilets both save water and reclaim nutrients for specific and acceptable uses.

Most importantly, the farm facilities allow for an intensive human and environment interaction, in which awareness of natural cycles can influences human behaviors to participate in those cycles. The technology involved in enabling those behaviors is not by itself sufficient: the built environment must contain a pedagogic aspect to elicit and nurture environmentally benign behaviors.
