FW: Manhole Retrofit - SD2 Stormwater Infrastructure 1:10
Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 3:19PM
Manhole Retrofits are intended to work with existing infrastructure in order to treat street and parking lot runoff before it is conveyed to surface and groundwater. The retrofit would fit into existing manholes and large catchbasins to filter runoff before it enters the pipe system. Zeolites have been looked into for use in this filter that would remove heavy metals in solution through ion exchange. A thin layer of sand, peat or mulch over the zeolites would trap solids removing hydrocarbons and metals sorbed to particulate matter. Oil separators can also be used to reduce clogging and on overflow structures. Zeolites would need to be replaced based on storm events and the treatment area every few months. Zeolites can be regenerated or cleaned for reuse. Although Zeolites can remove most if not all contaminants in the water, they also add sodium (among other more benign) ions and have a tendency to decrease Ph. The illustrated design is based on published scholarly articles. It will need additional testing to determine what is removed versus what is added to the runoff. Other filter medias and other filter configurations could also be explored. Cost analysis and maintenance issues need to be examined
