Growing Food and Providing Shade

The footprint of a building takes up land that could be farmed. Losing thisspace drastically impacts the production of the farm. This land could berecreated in the form of planters that could surround a building. Byproviding a simple structure system for the planting trays, this systemcould provide the same growing area or more, than what the buildingfootprint takes up. This system would also provide shade for a building andcould be thought of as a “food producing skin.” Also, this system could bemechanized and operate with the growing season. For example new plantscould start out on the south side, and then mature as they move along theroof and harvesting could take place on the north side.

I like this idea. It is functional, but also makes the farm a welcoming environment. Perhaps it could cover the area where SCA members come to pick up boxes.

I like the direction of this, however, from a purely practical standpoint, I think the structure would function better as a place for seed-starting trays. Seed trays are already on the farm, but on tables, and would function better than full-grown plants on one of these because the starts need considerably less soil, and are already contained anyway.

This is a good use of space, which is a valuable resource. Would the trays need hand watering, would they be connected to a drip system, or would they depend on natural rainfall?

I really like how this idea has multiple purposes: shading, growing/harvesting, aesthetics, etc. I also think this would be a great opportunity to showcase the growing process to SCA members. It could also be used for educational purposes: by having the growing areas split up physically, the ideas behind growing your own food could be easily understood. Also, if the residential portion of the farm integrated this structure, the students living there could possibly use the system as a source of their own food.
